In the 2023 CEV European Women's Volleyball Championship final, Turkey and Serbia put on one of the most iconic, head-to-head battles in volleyball history. In that epic final where breaths were held from Ankara to Belgrade, the Sultans of the Net lifted the trophy with a 3-2 victory. However, just as the balance of power between the two teams was razor-thin that day, the quality of volleyball we watched on the court was potentially just as close today.

So, what changed in this new clash between the two giants that caused Serbia to crumble into a heavy and lackluster 3-0 defeat on the court? The answer does not lie in player quality or tactical setups; the answer stands directly on the sidelines, within the boundaries of the technical area: Zoran Terzić.

The psychological, tactical, and managerial collapse behind this disaster experienced by Serbia needs to be examined in all its dimensions.

1. The Mental Battle Lost Before the Match Started: Excuse-Making

Great coaches focus their teams on victory; inadequate ones prepare alibis for potential failure months in advance. Starting months ago, instead of addressing his squad's deficiencies or developing an antidote to Turkey's game plan, Zoran Terzić shifted his focus off the court.

His psychological warfare launched through naturalized player discourse targeting Melissa Vargas and Turkey's roster structure was actually a covert message to his own team: "The opponent has the advantage; even if we lose, we are not to blame."

Yet, the exact same roster structure and key figures (Vargas, Karakurt, Eda) were on the court during that historic final 3 years ago, and Serbia was in a position to win the match until the very last ball. Terzić's reliance on non-volleyball topics for months did nothing but engrain the perception in the minds of the Serbian players that they were playing against an "unbeatable opponent."

2. Perception Management Instead of Improvement: On-Court Stagnation

A head coach's primary duty is to enrich offensive variations, sharpen defensive organization, and bring player performance charts to their peak. Terzić, however, spent his energy and focus creating controversy through the media and debating external factors.

The reflection of this on the court was bitter. While Turkey raised its service quality and block organization to the next level in recent years, time seemed to stand still on Serbia's side of the court. Because Terzić failed to make the moves that would carry his team forward technically and tactically, Serbia could offer no response to Turkey's high-tempo and aggressive volleyball.

3. In-Match Sabotage: Negative Energy from the Sidelines

Volleyball is a sport of momentum and focus. A referee's decision can be wrong, or momentum can shift to the opponent at a critical moment; in those exact moments, a coach's job is to calm the team down and keep them in the game.

Terzić, however, displayed the exact opposite stance during the semifinal match, virtually sabotaging his own team. His excessive and uncontrolled reactions to referee decisions pumped the tension from the sidelines directly onto the court. Already feeling the pressure of trailing on the scoreboard, the Serbian players completely disconnected from the game in the face of their coach's uncontrolled anger. Instead of leading during a crisis moment, Terzić became the crisis itself.

Conclusion: The Address of Responsibility is Clear

Serbian volleyball undoubtedly possesses world-class names and a great tradition. However, this clear 3-0 defeat taken in the semifinals did not stem from a lack of quality among the players on the court, but from the bankruptcy of the mind on the sidelines.

Zoran Terzić—who shifted his focus away from the court, sought controversy instead of technical grounds for his defeat months in advance, and left his team mentally isolated during the most critical moments of the match—is the primary architect of this defeat. As Turkey marches to the final with a well-deserved and dominant victory, Serbia is left to face the reality of this mindset on their head coach's bench.
