Enis Berberoğlu, a member of parliament for the social democratic Republican People’s Party (CHP), was sentenced to 25 years in jail by an Istanbul court on June 14 and immediately put in prison.

As any oriental country, the political culture of Turkey too, is that of a “culture of allegiance”. To be forgiven, what Mr. Dundar and Mr. Berberoglu have to do is homage to Ismet Inonu −the president of the republic after Ataturk− and not necessarily to Mr. ERDOGAN. According to the mainstream-paradigm shared by all Turkish intellectuals (of whom Dundar is the most prominent representative), INONU has not done anything meaningful and remarkable in years 1920-1960 until he reinvented himself as a Kautskian social democrat with the looming of his political rival and successor Mr. Ecevit. One old friend of mine has been able to avoid being accused in Ergenekon prosecution days by doing just this. Another friend (Prof. Kemal G.) was not that fortunate and spent some months behind the bars.
