Slide 1 of 13: It might seem as if 2018’s Detroit auto show was all about trucks. That is mostly true, between the new full-size pickups from two of the Big Three automakers and the resurrection of a mid-size pickup from the third. The show also saw several surprises in the car realm and even the emergence of a Chinese brand touting concrete plans to sell cars in the United States before the end of the decade. Slide 2 of 13: If the first generation of Acura’s RDX was the crossover SUV equivalent of a college student—amped up, eager to party, daring—its 2013 follow-up had somehow woken up married with a mortgage. Gone was the original RDX’s high-strung turbocharged 2.3-liter inline-four engine, its torque-vectoring Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system, and its firm ride. All of that was replaced by an inoffensive crossover with a smooth, effortless V-6; a soft suspension setup; and conventional all-wheel drive. 2019 Acura RDX Prototip

Slide 3 of 13: Chevrolet has rolled out the all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, which wears buff new bodywork and sits on a completely redesigned frame. The latest Silverado promises to be lighter and more capable than its predecessor, but unlike the Ford F-150, which uses aluminum bodywork for both the cab and the bed to trim pounds, the 2019 Silverado reserves the lighter material for its hood, doors, and tailgate. The Chevy’s roof, fenders, and bed are once again made of steel. Chevy claims to have trimmed as much as 450 pounds from the crew-cab V-8 2019 Silverado relative to its predecessor, including 88 pounds from the body and another 88 pounds taken out of the frame. with READ MORE >>

2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Slide 5 of 13: China’s state-owned Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) pulled the wraps off of its latest concept car at the Detroit auto show, and it’s electric. Dubbed Enverge, the battery-electric SUV wears svelte bodywork and sports traditional concept car design cues such as butterfly doors, small cameras in place of exterior mirrors, and a massive digital dashboard display. GAC claims the Enverge can travel more than 370 miles on a single charge thanks to a 71-kWh battery pack. READ MORE >>

Officially confirmed last year, the Ranger has had a convoluted path back to U.S. showrooms that has been well documented: Customers decried its demise in 2011, Ford denied its return for a couple of years, and then General Motors released its revised Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon mid-size pickups and sold more than 145,000 units combined in 2016, the second year of production. Slide 7 of 13: Hyundai created the first Veloster by taking the bones of its familiar and conventional Accent compact car and whipping up a hatchback that, at first glance, looked as if it had a conventional five-door layout. Of course, that was only if onlookers were on the passenger side, which sported two portals. On the driver’s side, they’d think it was a three-door, as there was just one door there. Even now, more than six years after that car went on sale in the United States, this layout is still weird. Unfortunately, the funkiness and fun promised by the oddball door design didn’t carry over to the driving experience, as even the hottest versions proved to be lukewarm. 2019 Hyundai Veloster

Slide 8 of 13: A dozen years have passed since a proper flagship sedan has appeared at the top of the Infiniti range, but it feels even longer. The last full-size four-door to don the Infiniti logo—the bloated third-generation Q45—sold in such low numbers that it might as well have been discontinued six years earlier. In the interim, Infiniti floated a couple of flagship-grade concepts—the Essence coupe in 2009 and the Q80 Inspiration in 2014—but they ultimately served as little more than styling prognostications. Now Infiniti has announced it will show another sleek, plus-size four-door, the Q Inspiration, at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. While details remain scarce, one picture is enough to make us hope that its prospects for production are rather more promising than were those of its stillborn predecessors. READ MORE >>
